Porcupines are medium-sized rodents with a coat of sharp quills that serve as a powerful deterrent against predators. Contrary to popular belief, they cannot shoot their quills. There are two main types of porcupines: the Old World porcupines found in Europe, Asia, and Africa, and the New World porcupines native to North and South America.
